Essential Knowledge For Your Business

Being legally literate is essential

When you decided to launch your business as a designer (or coach, consultant, strategist, trainer…) I bet you didn’t expect to need a mini-law degree to go along with it. Between the disclaimers, the privacy statements and the contracts you’re signing with clients and partners, it’s easy to get a bit confused or overwhelmed by the new jargon.

In today’s edition of The Smiley Sessions, I’ll be sending you back to school, so you can learn your Legal ABCs.

Whereas, heretofor, thereinafter, notwithstanding, reciprocal indemnification…Do you know your legal ABCs? And no – C doesn’t stand for confusion…though maybe it should.

You launched your business because you’re great at what you do: development, coaching, design…you didn’t launch it because you thought it’d be fun to earn an unofficial law degree. But – you need to know those Legal ABCs so that you can protect yourself, your business and your clients.

Your Smiley Sessions Challenge:

Grab that highlighter and head back to school! Read your contracts, disclaimers and privacy policies (you know…the ones you found somewhere on the internet and copy pasted…) and highlight each word or concept you don’t understand. Then hit the books and look ‘em up.
